To truly get a glimpse of how we embrace our colorful past here around our hotel in Fort Smith, pause for a moment to consider our visitor's information center. The ornate building is reported to be the only former brothel on the National Register of Historic Places. (Yes, the “Miss Laura” of Miss Laura's Visitor Center was a madam.) To understand the origins of Fort Smith, once a gritty border town on America's Western frontier, you need to see the fort itself. You'll find the remnants of the first fort up on the bluff overlooking the Arkansas River at the Fort Smith National Historic Site. The site features the restored courtroom of “Hangin' Judge” Isaac C. Parker and the jail named “Hell on the Border.” Make your next stop the Fort Smith Museum of History, where you can visit an old-fashioned soda fountain for a cool refreshment. Fort Chaffee is also a must-stop for any Elvis fan-that's right; Elvis Presley was inducted into the U.S. Army here in 1958. Lastly, wind down your trip in downtown Fort Smith. The antique and specialty shops hold all sorts of treasures to commemorate your trip to our frontier town.
