In 1967 the Gateway Arch became an integral part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and was the tallest monument in the United States. The Arch is made of stainless steel but is hollow inside and contains a unique tram system that brings visitors to an observation deck at the top. During construction, both legs were built simultaneously. When the time came to connect the legs, thermal expansion of the sunward-facing south leg prevented it from aligning. The STL Fire Department sprayed the south leg with water from firehoses, cooling it until it aligned with the north leg. The tram is an egg-shaped "elevator". The trip to the top takes four minutes. The car doors have narrow windows, allowing passengers to see the interior stairways and structure of the Arch during the trip.At the top of the arch, riders enter the arched observation area with thirty-two windows allowing views across the Mississippi River and the City of Saint Louis.

When completed in 1874, the Eads Bridge was the longest arch bridge in the world. The ribbed steel arch spans were considered daring, as was the use of steel as a primary structural material: it was the first such use of true steel in a major bridge project. The Eads Bridge is a combined road and railway bridge over the Mississippi River, connecting St. Louis and East Illinois. In 1874, a "test elephant" strolled across the Eads Bridge to prove it was safe. It was believed that elephants had instincts that would keep them from setting foot on unsafe structures. Two weeks later, Eads sent 14 locomotives back and forth across the bridge at one time. The Eads Bridge, which became an iconic image of the city of St. Louis, is still in use. The bridge crosses the St. Louis riverfront between Laclede's Landing, to the north, and the grounds of the Gateway Arch, to the south. The St. Louis MetroLink light rail line has used the rail deck since 1993.

Forest Park opened in 1876 and is one of the largest urban landscape parks - over 50% larger than New York's Central Park.In 1904 St. Louis hosted the world at a major international World's Fair. After the fair, many of the pavilions and exhibits were demolished (including the original Ferris Wheel) or removed. What buildings remain became the seeds of future museums including a replica of the 1904 World's Fair Pavilion pictured above. The aviary gave root to the zoo, for example. The Palace of the Fine Arts became the Saint Louis Art Museum. Forest Park remains home to many of St. Louis' most popular attractions including the Zoo, outdoor Muny Opera, History and Art Museums, Jewel Box botanical garden, St. Louis Science Center and Historic Boat House.

The Fox was built in 1929 as a showcase for the films of the Fox Film Corporation and elaborate stage shows. It was one of a group of five spectacular Fox Theatres built by Fox in the late 1920s. When the theater opened on January 31, 1929 it was reportedly the second-largest theater in the United States. It was one of St. Louis's leading movie theaters through the 1960s and has survived to become a versatile performing arts venue. The Fox Theatre closed in March 1978 only to reopen in September 1982 with the Broadway musical Barnum. Today, The Fox has become the second stop for popular Broadway Shows and monthly you can see the best of the best including Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. The Jewel Box (also known as the St. Louis Floral Conservatory and the City of St. Louis Floral Display House) is a greenhouse located in Forest Park. It now serves as a public horticultural facility and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It was built in 1936 and consists of five stepped, composition-covered wood roofs with a protected glass roof to prevent damage from frequent hailstorms. In 1913, the city looked to build a facility to protect plants from high levels of smoke and soot within the city. The Jewel Box was built as a display greenhouse to showcase these various plants which could survive. It is said that someone called the displays "like a jewel box", hence the name. The Jewel Box consists of 16,664 square feet of plate glass in over 4,000 panes, set in wood and wrought iron supports. A reflecting pool lies in front of the Jewel Box's entrance.

In 1914, the "founder" of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial began staging pageant-Masques on Art Hill in Forest Park.On June 5, 1917 the opera Aida was the first performance presented on what would become the Muny stage. In 1930, the stage was equipped with a turntable for performance purposes. This would be reconstructed in 1997 because of dilapidation. The Muny produces all of its musicals (typically seven) in the season and operates only in the summer. Hailed as the "nation's oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre.", the Muny operates performances 7 days a week, with a new show beginning every Monday night.

Soulard is a historic French neighborhood with picturesque residential neighborhoods filled with restaurants, bars, and pubs, among other businesses and is one of the oldest communities in the city. These neighborhood bars play host to a variety of live music; especially the blues and jazz bands which the city is known for. It is also home to a large popular Farmers' market, several historic churches, and the North American headquarters of Anheuser-Busch.Soulard is a thriving, eclectic area, and is home to the 2nd largest Mardi Gras celebration in the country. The event is much like the New Orleans celebration in that it hosts several parades during the Mardi Gras season. Mardi Gras festivities include a Pet Parade where participants dress up their pet in costume and end with Wiener dog races. On the Saturday before Fat Tuesday, people from all over come to storm the streets for the official Mardi Gras parade. The Fat Tuesday parade ends Mardi Gras celebrations in the evening.

Ted Drewes began serving frozen custard in 1930. Although the original location is now closed, the Chippewa Street (part of historic U.S. Route 66) location is famously known as the only frozen-dessert stand in the entire United States to operate 24/7 during summer months. Both locations are extremely popular during the spring and summer months, and are a tradition for many after attending St. Louis Cardinals baseball games. The shop may be best known for a specialty called a "concrete". A concoction blended so thick that it and its spoon do not fall out when the cup is turned upside-down. Servers often demonstrate this before handing an order to the customer.

Made famous by the Yogi Berra quote, "It's so crowded nobody goes there anymore", the Hill is a mostly Italian-American neighborhood famous for the large number of locally renowned Italian-American restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores and two bocce gardens. Locals will tell you, the Best Italian Fare St. Louis has to offer is found on The Hill. Italians, from northern Italy and Sicily, settled in the area starting in the late 19th century. That heritage remains evident today. Some businesses on the Hill are Amighetti's Bakery, Viviano's and Di Gregorio's grocery stores, Zia’s, Cunetto's, and Rigazzi's restaurants and Missouri Baking Company.Baseball greats Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola, Sr. grew up on the Hill; their boyhood homes are across the street from each other on Elizabeth Avenue. Four of the five St. Louisans on the US soccer team that defeated England in the 1950 FIFA World Cup came from here, a story that is told in The Game of Their Lives.

The 1904 St. Louis World's Fair is credited for the birth of the St. Louis Zoo. The Smithsonian Institution constructed a walk-through bird cage for the World's Fair where ten years later the citizens of St. Louis bought the Flight Cage and the St. Louis Zoo was born.Expansion of the zoo started in 1921 when the Bear Pits were built. The zoo continued to expand with the Primate House in 1923 and the Reptile House in 1927.Construction of other animal house continued over the next three decades including the Bird House, the Antelope House and the Ape House. It continued with the opening of the Zooline Railroad in 1963 and the Children’s Zoo in 1969. Many of the zoo’s best attraction were built in the last 15 years including the River’s edge (featuring Asian elephants, cheetahs, hippos, rhinos) an Insectarium (including a Butterfly House), The Penguin and Puffin Coast and Caribbean Cove (featuring a stingrays kids petting area). The zoo remains free of charge for visitors.
