Joseph Robidoux, a French trapper, named our town in 1826 after his patron saint. A few years later, in 1858, the luxurious Hotel Patee House opened and became the national headquarters of the Pony Express-an organization forever associated with our town. Today, the hotel in St. Joseph is now a museum where you can learn the history of the young men who rode 2,000 miles west to Sacramento. Not far from our hotel in St. Joseph, visitors can see the house where the outlaw Jesse James was shot and killed in 1882. The town began to boom around that time, with the introduction of products like Aunt Jemima pancake flour, a St. Joe invention. Much of the wealth from that time can be seen on Hall Street, where many of St. Joseph's mansions are available to tour. To get a glimpse of the West through art, see the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art-a cultural capital for northern Missouri. Lastly, don't miss the Missouri Theatre, a renovated movie palace that now serves as a center for the performing arts.
