First it was used as shelter by the Woodland Indians. Then its beautiful Onyx was mined for the decorative stone you see in many downtown homes built during Queen Victoria's reign. Some wanted to use it as a tuberculosis hospital and even a jet propulsion lab. Yet today, the Onyx Mountain Caverns have survived, and guests can see the magnificent entrance (an acre wide) near our Hampton Inn® hotel in St. Robert/Ft. Leonard Wood. While St. Robert may be a new town (it wasn't chartered as a village until 1951), we're close to many venerable sites and things to do in St. Robert, MO. If you enjoy spelunking, check out another cave in the area, Miller Cave. The Old Stagecoach Stop has been renovated and reopened since closing in the 1960s. Lastly, guests of our hotel in St. Roberts shouldn't miss the Ft. Leonard Wood Museum, a collection of World War II barracks that give a good glimpse of what military life has been like after the Second World War.
