Staten Island was sighted by Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524 and named by Henry Hudson in 1609. Ferry service to Manhattan began in 1712. In the 1880s, the island became a popular resort; and in 1898, one of New York City's five boroughs. The Staten Island Ferry, instituted by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1829, is our link to Manhattan. While you're here, you'll find an excellent park system, many historical homes and the Greenbelt, a nature preserve that spans 2,800 acres. The Staten Island Zoo is a popular destination in New York, home to a tropical rainforest, African savannah and children's farmyard. It's just four miles from our hotel. On Staten Island, you'll also find the Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences, a spot that features 80,000 pieces from maps to photographs. Lastly, our hotel on Staten Island is nestled in a 415-acre wildlife preserve, offering a place of peace and wonderment in the nation's largest city.
