The area around our hotel in Murphy features some of the most beautiful scenery in the South. Some estimate that the southern Appalachian Mountains are the oldest in the world, and looking out upon them at sunset or dawn, we think you'll be inclined to agree. There are several hundred miles of hiking trails in our county along with lakes that feature boating, fishing, and swimming. Don't miss the Nantahala National Forest and the nearby Nantahala Gorge. For a little history, swing by the Cherokee County Courthouse in downtown Murphy. It's made entirely of locally quarried blue marble and dates back to the 1930s. Lastly, you'll want to see the John C. Campbell Folk School, established in 1925. The school puts on festivals, concerts, dances, and classes on pottery, basketry, weaving, carving, spinning, and blacksmithing. Its 372-acre campus has become a national treasure and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The school is just eight miles from our hotel in Murphy.
