The Arts Depot is a community-based arts program with regional impact. The Arts Depot is a member of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia Association of Museums, Arts Alliance Mountain Empire, and the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. The Depot Artists Association sponsors awards in regional exhibitions. It is operated by the Depot Artists Association, a non-profit, tax-exempt Virginia corporation. Contributions of service and tax deductible donations are vital to the Arts Depot.

The Tavern, the oldest of Abingdon's historic buildings and one of the oldest west of the Blue Ridge, was built in 1779. It was used from its beginning as a tavern and overnight inn for stagecoach travelers. The Tavern has had such guests as Henry Clay; Louis Philippe, King of France; President Andrew Jackson; and Pierre Charles L'Enfant, designer of Washington D.C. The first post office on the western slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains was located in the east wing of The Tavern. The original mail slot is still in place and can be seen today from the street.
During the past two centuries, The Tavern has served as a tavern, bank, bakery, general store, cabinet shop, barber shop, private residence, post office, antique shop and restaurant. It even served as a hospital for wounded Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War.

Barter was founded during the Great Depression by Robert Porterfield, an out of work actor living in New York who saw an abundance of food in his homeland SW VA, but no live theatre. He opened the doors in 1933 proclaiming, "With vegetables you cannot sell, you can buy a good laugh." Gregory Peck, Ernest Bognine, Patricia Neal, Ned Beatty, Hume Cronyn, Gary Collins and Larry Linville are among the many famous alumni who launched their careers here.
