Old Court House Museum – Vicksburg

While staying at Hampton Inn & Suites Vicksburg, explore nearby historical attractions including the Old Court House Museum. Perched on one of the highest hills in Vicksburg, the Court House for Warren County was completed in 1860. The family of the city's founder, Newitt Vick donated the land, and with a cost of $100,000, the building was named one of the 20 most outstanding court houses in America by the American Institute of Architects.

Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President, launched his political career from the grounds of the court house. During the Civil War the cupola was often used as a lookout by Confederates because of the expansive views it offered of the riverfront and surrounding terrain. During the war the building was often the target of Union shelling, but amazingly only suffered one major hit. On July 4th, 1863, Union General U. S. Grant reviewed his victorious army, as the Stars and Stripes replaced the Stars and Bars over Vicksburg.

With the construction of a new court house in 1939, and talk of demolition, the museum's founder Eva W. Davis established the Vicksburg and Warren County Historical Society to aid in preserving the structure. In 1947 she was elected president of the society, and on June 3rd, 1948 the museum opened its doors. The museum today houses a collection of Confederate flags, the tie worn by Jefferson Davis at his inauguration, portraits, china, silver, and clothing. View pioneer and Native American artifacts from the region, as well as an original Teddy Bear given to a local child by Roosevelt himself. Visit the unique gift shop, and find authentic Civil War relics.

After a day at the Old Courthouse Museum, retreat to our Vicksburg hotel and enjoy a comfortable room or suite with modern amenities including free WiFi.
